Flashspoter - The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Film, Deadpool & Wolverine, achieved the highest opening weekend box office of all time for an R-rated film. Based on a Variety report on Sunday (28/7), the film grossed US$205 million in its debut weekend in North America.
This impressive feat surpassed the previous record set by Deadpool (2016) with US$132 million, and pushed Deadpool 2 (2018) from second to third place with US$125 million. The number of Deadpool & Wolverine opening weekends also exceeded Inside Out 2, making it the largest opening weekend in 2024.
The film's performance ranks it as the eighth best debut in history, ahead of Black Panther (2018) and slightly behind Jurassic World (2015) and The Avengers (2012). In addition, it became the ninth film in history to surpass US$200 million in its opening weekend.
Internationally, Deadpool & Wolverine was also a significant success, grossing US$233.3 million, bringing its global opening weekend total to US$438 million. This placed the film as the sixth highest grossing film of 2024.
What's more, the film's success at the box office has exceeded its production budget of reportedly around US$200 million, as well as its promotional costs of US$100 million.
Notably, the influence of Deadpool & Wolverine has contributed to the MCU's new record, making it the first franchise to surpass total global box office revenue of us$30 billion.
Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, who also worked on Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018), Deadpool 3 stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the lead duo. The Film also features Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Dafne Keen, and several other surprise actors.
In addition, Deadpool & Wolverine has the advantage of being the first MCU film to receive an R rating, while previous releases were rated PG-13.
