Flashspoter - HBO has officially confirmed that the crime drama series Task will continue into season 2. The decision was made not long after the first season's airing that garnered a strong response from the audience and the critics. Mark Ruffalo will return to portray FBI agent Tom Brandis which means that he is the only actor whose presence has been confirmed for the new season. The follow-up of the show is a signal from the channel that it is willing to keep the standard of its original dramas.
The task was initially televised in September 2025 and was the instant winner of the audience's hearts because of its gripping tale and lifelike portrayal of hierarchies in the underworld. Critic rating for the first season on Rotten Tomatoes was at 96%, and the audience rating was close to 75%. The series soon turned out to be one of HBO's most striking releases of the year thanks to the perfect combination of quality writing, strong character development, and dimly lit scenes.
The first season of the series revolves around the story of Tom Brandis, an FBI agent who is leading a task force to the investigation of a series of armed robberies in drug-related homes. The main cause of the robberies is Robbie Prendergrast, a decent man who is forced by his family's situation to take the dangerous path. The conflict escalates when one of Robbie's stunts targets property belonging to a motorcycle gang, triggering a major escalation involving various criminal groups and law enforcement officers.
The story of the inaugural season ended with a number of serious consequences that not only shook Brandis ' life, but also changed the dynamics of the conflict that occurred throughout the season. Many of the main characters don't survive to the end of the story, so a potential season 2 is expected to move in a new direction with a refocus on Brandis ' journey and possible cases related to criminal networks in the Philadelphia area and beyond.
The new season will be helmed by Brad Ingelsby, creator and showrunner of Task. Ingelsby was previously known for the success of Mare of Easttown, which was also set in Pennsylvania. Through the Task project, he again presents the working-class criminal world that is close to everyday life, but still presents the tension typical of investigative dramas. Ingelsby remains the lead writer and executive producer, working alongside a creative team that was also largely involved in the previous season.
Mark Ruffalo, who succeeded in bringing the character of Tom Brandis into a complex main figure, is rumored to have signed a new contract before the announcement of the extension is done. Given that Ruffalo has a number of big movie projects on his side, his participation in the second season really emphasizes how his character is key to the development of the storyline as well as the creative direction of the series.
