Flashspoter - Sony is once again expanding its portfolio of sports games to new platforms, this time through MLB The Show Mobile, which officially arrives for iOS and Android devices. The adaptation is the latest move after MLB's the Show series was for years known as a console title, before finally reaching Xbox in 2021 and Nintendo Switch in 2022. This version for mobile is a standalone experience created explicitly for today's smartphones, and hence it is not linked with the console editions or crossplay features.
MLB The Show Mobile game is currently in soft launch phase and is only available in the Philippines. According to Sony, this limited release to a specific region is a way for the developers to check the server performance, gameplay, and monetization system testing before they go worldwide. Even if the company has not published any timetable for the international market, Sony is quite sure that the title is meant to be released beyond the initial region eventually.
It was once more San Diego Studio that was behind the development of MLB The Show Mobile, the same team that has been working on the series since its 2006 origin. The mobile version is not just a console port; it is a separate project that utilizes modern hardware to deliver a more lifelike baseball experience. The Game is optimized for mid-range devices up to the latest flagships, such as the iPhone 16 or devices with equivalent specifications, as well as Samsung Galaxy S25 and Sony Xperia V on the Android side.
The minimum specifications are quite strict to ensure optimal performance. In the case of iOS gadgets, the game is in need of at least an A13 processor, 3 GB of RAM, and an iOS 26 operating system. The second generation iPhone SE to iPhone 17 Pro Max are the supported devices. Nevertheless, the iPad is not listed as a compatible device. Whereas, the Android version requires a processor similar to MediaTek Dimensity 9200 with a Mali G715 GPU in order to be able to give at least 4 GB of RAM and Android 12 Snow Cone as the OS. Even in this first phase, Android tablets are not supported.
In terms of content, MLB The Show Mobile offers solo and player-versus-player game modes. There are more than 1,100 MLB player cards past and present that can be collected, upgraded, and used to build an all-star team according to player strategy. The existence of a marketplace allows players to buy or sell cards, similar to the virtual Team mode in a number of other popular sports games. An in-game purchase system is also available, including random items that become part of the monetization ecosystem.
One of the player's hand cards contains the player's momentum cost, which is a statistical figure that indicates the player's role and effectiveness in the game. This momentum consumption is made part of the strategy play as it is a decisive factor of the winning probabilities in competitive matches. In addition, the gameplay prioritizes the player's skills, from the timing of throwing the ball, hitting accuracy, to the control of runners in real-time for attempts to steal the base.
At the time of the soft launch, Sony enabled the purchase of in-game currency, Stubs. Unspent Stubs are guaranteed to be stored until full release. However, purchased packs and unopened player items will not carry over to the final version. All these things will be converted into a special type of money that can be used in the Loyalty Shop when the worldwide launch happens. Most of the progress will also be reset as part of the technical trials.
The presence of MLB The Show Mobile shows Sony's commitment to strengthening its presence in the mobile market. This step follows other projects such as Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, which also came first through a regional soft launch. With a huge fan base and the development of mobile devices, the mobile version of MLB The Show has the potential to expand the reach of players who have only enjoyed it through consoles.
