Flashspoter - Lionsgate has finally revealed the ultra-short teaser for the next thriller chapter in the popular dystopian series, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on The Reaping. The film will be a return to the world of Panem, but from a different perspective, is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026. In other words, the story is going to follow the journey of a young Haymitch Abernathy, the time when he was not the mentor of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, characters we met in the first films, but for the first time, actually.
The Film is based on the 2025 novel Sunrise on The Reaping by Suzanne Collins. The story is set 24 years before the original Hunger Games and follows the Fiftieth Hunger Games, which is also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The special rules for the second Quarter Quell dictate that each district must double the number of tributes that they send, therefore 48 participants in total are to fight each other until only one survives.
Haymitch Abernathy, young, is brought to life on screen by Joseph Zada, with the character being re-imagined instead of the one that had been played by Woody Harrelson. In the teaser that was released, Lionsgate gives a brief look of how Haymitch confronts the selection, getting ready for the arena, and a first glimpse of his method of survival. The visual focus is directed towards the reaping atmosphere, the gripping atmosphere of the arena, and the inter-tribute dynamics, including the early alliance opportunities that determine the course of the game.
The Film will be directed by Francis Lawrence, who also directed the previous three films in the franchise. Billy Ray penned down the script. After their successful run of five films that have together made over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office, producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force are once again back in production.
The cast of The Reaping Sunrise is quite impressive, a solid mix of seasoned stars and fresh faces. Elle Fanning was a young version of Effie Trinket, Ralph Fiennes was President Coriolanus Snow, and Kieran Culkin was Caesar Flickerman, additionally, Joseph Zada was also there. Jesse Plemons was a co-star as young Plutarch Heavensbee. A few other names that got on the board were Glenn Close, Billy Porter, Mckenna Grace, Whitney Peak, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Ben Wang, Lili Taylor, and Edvin Ryding.
The first week of sales for The Reaping was recorded at 1.5 million copies in the countries of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It is more than twice the number of copies of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes that were sold in the first week, thus the origin story of Haymitch is met with great excitement. The success of the novel became one of Lionsgate's strong foundations for re-expanding the film franchise.
In the teaser, several key elements of the novel begin to be shown, including a totem shaped flint striker with snake and mockingjay symbols. This object is not only an important device in Haymitch's journey, but also appears as the main visual motif in the film's promotional materials. Additionally, the exposure of tribute characters like Maysilee Donner, Ampert Latier, and Wyatt Callow was ramped up a bit, indicating the familial ties and disputes which would become the main themes of the narrative.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on The Reaping deeply pans the lore of Panem and emotionally equips the audience with the setting and Haymitch's trauma which ultimately shaped his adult life. It has always been an important part of the franchise, especially in Catching Fire, that the events of the second Quarter Quell were only referred to, but now they are actually retold in detail via film.
Lionsgate seems to be leading up to a big 2026 launch with the initial teaser already out a year before the release. This undertaking is a clear indication that the Hunger Games Universe has a vast unexplored area left in terms of characters and the history of Panem.
